In an older, small study from 2001, 25 men with prostate cancer decreased their overall fat intake while using flaxseed supplements. It found that diets high in polyunsaturated fatty acids decreased serum testosterone production. Another study also found that spearmint lowered testosterone levels in rats with PCOS. An older 2010 study involving 42 women showed that drinking spearmint herbal tea twice daily over a 30-day period significantly lowered testosterone levels. The study found that flaxseed seemed to lower her testosterone levels.
Several epidemiological studies demonstrated an inverse relationship between obesity and circulating total T concentrations 5,6,7,8. It was hypothesized that adipose tissue-derived aromatase can convert T to estradiol, which in turn suppresses the release of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH)-luteinizing hormone (LH) from the hypothalamus . T is also involved in erythropoiesis, bone and muscle formation, the body composition, and iron metabolism.

The study results suggest that individuals who prefer Western-style food (bread and pastries, dairy products, and desserts), eat out, and eat fewer homemade foods, noodles, and dark green vegetables are more likely to have an unhealthy body composition (e.g., increased visceral fat and decreased skeletal muscle mass) and low serum total T levels, and are likely to develop hypogonadism.
An older 2014 review also noted that there is some high quality evidence showing that mint lowers testosterone levels in women with PCOS. Researchers noted that spearmint essential oil reduced testosterone levels in these rats. The menthol in mint may reduce testosterone levels, but there is a lack of human research to support this. The paper also notes that alcohol consumption causes an increase in testosterone levels in females.
